From the Archive (Dec, 2016): BollyX is a Bollywood-inspired dance-fitness programme that combines dynamic choreography with the hottest music from around the world

Lalchan is the epitome of a fitness fiend: she is not only involved with BollyX but is also a certified licensed instructor of various Zumba specialties such as Aqua Zumba, Zumba Sentao, Zumba Gold and Zumba Kids. In addition to that, she is a trained bellydancer.

BollyX's 'X' factor

According to Lalchan, the final sequence of a typical 50-minute BollyX class is what makes it unique. This is when everyone gets to perform, shine and express their individual personality. Moreover, all classes follow the formula of high, moderate and low intensity dance sequences and HIIT to get you moving and sweating to burn anywhere between 500-800 calories!

Whom is it for?

BollyX is for anyone and everyone. It caters to a diverse range of age groups, and clients of all fitness levels are welcome. Lalchan says that instructors are dedicated to ensure a safe, fun and effective workout for all. There is also the option of the BollyX LIT (Low Impact Training) regimen for those who prefer a low-impact workout.

First timers

Lalchan says that interested first timers can expect to share the class’s infectious energy, groove to the expressions and moves of Bollywood, let loose and bring out their inner Bollywood rockstar swag. She advises newbies to show up for the class earlier than the others, and let the instructor know that you are new so (s)he can give you some tips and extra cues. She also suggests that as a newcomer, you should position yourself in the middle of the class so that you can watch and follow the steps of the regular, experienced students in the front row while still having a clear view of the instructor. Something else she always tells her students? “Always start with your feet, and add the arms when you are ready. Do not be too self-conscious, and simply have fun while burning some serious calories!”

Lalchan’s expert tips
  • Mind over matter! “Whether it’s the weather, whether it’s the last set of rep, or whether you are a timid beginner, remember that you can always do better than you think. So get rid of your excuses.”

  •  Fitness buddies! As a fitness expert, Lalchan sees the importance of partnering up with the right workout buddy. You can motivate each other and also help keep each other’s form on point and correct any obvious mistakes.
